Prescription drugs used to control cholesterol are known as statins, which also reduce the risk of heart disease. Baycol is a statin drug used to control cholesterol levels. Introduced by Bayer Pharmaceuticals in 1999, the company removed it from the market in 2001 after over 50 people taking the medication died. Hundreds of others suffered severe side effects from this drug.
If you or a family member have taken Baycol and experienced muscle pain, weakness, or other side effects, you need an experienced personal injury attorney to advise you. Click here to contact an injury lawyer with expertise on Baycol at the law offices of O'Connor Acciani & Levy.
Elderly Baycol patients were most at risk as were those taking high doses of the medication. Baycol is especially damaging when taken with the drug gemfibrozil, also used to reduce cholesterol. The problem is its aggressive effect on muscle cells, known as rhabdomyolysis. This condition breaks down muscle cells allowing toxic cellular materials to enter the bloodstream and damage vital organs such as the kidneys.
In addition to fatalities, Baycol caused kidney and liver failure, chronic fatigue, joint and muscle pain and seizures. Other side effects include passing of dark urine, fever, weakness, nausea and vomiting. Five other statins currently on the market are safe alternatives to Baycol.
If you or anyone you know have suffered side effects or poor health due to taking Baycol, contact O'Connor Acciani & Levy, LLC immediately to investigate your right to file suit against Bayer Pharmaceuticals. Click here or call 513-241-7111.
