The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been investigating Ford Explorer Sport Trac rollovers since 2001 when the vehicle first appeared on the SUV market. Prior to the Sport Trac, Ford Explorers had a higher accident and rollover rate than competitor SUVs.

This problem first came to the attention of the public when Firestone Tire Company was blamed for the unusually high incidence of Explorer rollovers following tire failures. Since that time, NHTSA discovered that many accidents occurred with non-Firestone tires on Explorers. This study led to evaluation of the design and stability of the Explorer.

National car crash statistics were analyzed to show that the Ford Explorer is involved in more tire-related and subsequent rollover accidents than other SUVs. James Fell, former Chief of Research at NHTSA said, “There may be a factor with the Ford Explorer beyond the tire issue. It's a first indicator that they may have a stability problem."

Several factors linked to the higher-than-expected rollover rate in Explorers include:

  • Under-inflated tires, recommended by Ford to improve stability
  • Use of an unstable pick-up style frame (from the Ford Ranger design)
  • Soft suspension settings

Researchers also found that the rate of tire-related rollover accidents was considerably higher on two-wheel-drive Explorers like the Sport Trac, than on four-wheel-drive Fords. A new type of driving test called the “fishhook” or “J” hook found that the Sport Trac had a tendency to tip onto two wheels during tire blowouts, sharp turns and emergency maneuvers used in avoiding accidents.

When a vehicle tips onto two wheels, the possibility of a rollover is much more likely. NHTSA found that the Sport Trac tipped and rolled over up to 40% of the time during these tests. Ford Explorer or Explorer Sport Trac accidents are caused by tire tread separation, or tire blowout, resulting in serious damage including roof crush, roof pillar collapse, or vehicle rollover.
