Rezulin Personal Injury Lawyers

Cincinnati, Ohio

Rezulin, a type II diabetes medication, was manufactured by Parke-Davis/Warner-Lambert. This drug helps lower and balance blood sugars that are not controlled by insulin or by other oral anti-diabetic medications, but also damages the liver. Personal injury attorneys at O'Connor Acciani & Levy, LLC will evaluate your Rezulin case at no charge and advise you of your rights.

In March of 2000, the FDA requested that Parke-Davis/Warner-Lambert remove Rezulin from the market following evidence that the drug caused severe liver damage (cirrhosis of the liver). In some cases, liver transplants were necessary; in others, the patients died. This damage is the basis for several lawsuits pending against the drug manufacturer.

In the 1990s, Rezulin was the only treatment available to insulin-resistant Diabetes Mellitus patients. Park-Davis/Warner-Lambert kept Rezulin on the market even after discovering its liver toxicity, as their patients had no alternative medications. They justified this action by warning consumers on product labels that there was risk of liver cirrhosis, and recommended close medical monitoring of liver function.

A few similar products were tested for liver damage in the late 1990s, Avandia and Actos. When FDA established that these drugs were safer than Rezulin, the agency requested that Parke-Davis/Warner-Lambert remove Rezulin from the market.

FDA estimated that 500,000 people were using Rezulin when it was recalled. Sixty people had died as of March 2000 and there were 90 reports of liver failure connected with Rezulin use.
