Cincinnati Overpass Collapse Kills One, Injures Another UPDATE: Police have identified the construction worker involved in the accident as Brandon Carl, 35, of Kentucky. Carl was operating a backhoe when the bridge collapsed. The Cincinnati Fire Department has released initial details on the collapse of an interstate overpass in Cincinnati on Monday evening. According to the report, the incident occurred on I-75 in the southbound lanes just near Hopple Street and resulted in the death of a construction worker and the injury of a truck driver that hit the debris from the bridge as it crashed into the roadway. Witnesses to the scene were quoted as hearing "a real big boom," which was followed shortly after by a number of police cars that rushed to the scene. In a statement from Police Chief Jeff Blackwell:
"The big rig driver is very lucky; in a matter of seconds his fate would have probably been different."
Blackwell has advised that the City of Cincinnati will work together with the Department of Transportation to determine the cause of the incident. In the interim, several hundred tons of concrete and debris are being removed from the scene, with southbound lanes on the interstate cheap drugs being closed for at least another 48 hours. While the names of the deceased construction worker and the injured trucker are yet to be released, the driver was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with what are believed to be minor injuries.
