Tow Truck Driver Killed While Loading Vehicle On State Route 104

John A. Carpenter Jr. was killed Monday night when he was attempting to load a disabled vehicle onto his tow truck in southeast Columbus. According to police, Carpenter was preparing to tow a disabled vehicle from the westbound lanes of State Route 104. He was struck by a vehicle being driven by Brian K. Spencer. Spencer was traveling westbound in the far right lane, but failed to move over one lane while the tow truck had its flashing lights on. Spencer lost control of his vehicle and struck four vehicles that were off to the right side of the road as well as Carpenter. Spencer was transported to a local hospital where he is in stable condition. Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other people involved in the accident were treated at the scene of the crash. Ohio law requires motorists to move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles with their lights activated. According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, a tow truck driver is killed every six days in the U.S. by drivers who failed to follow the move over law. Many more firefighters, police officers and highway workers are also fatally injured in these types of accidents. If someone you love has been wrongfully killed due to a careless driver, the victims family may be entitled to file a wrongful death claim. The attorneys at O'Connor, Acciani & Levy can help you determine if you are eligible to file a claim for your loss. Contact an Ohio personal injury lawyer from our law firm today.
