Truck Driver Dies After Train Collision

Steven Hess died on Friday afternoon after a dump truck he was driving collided with a train near Walton, Kentucky. Hess was traveling on Old Lexington Pike near Dixie Highway when he drove through a railroad intersection onto the trucks. The dump truck was hit on the passenger side by a Norfolk Southern train and flipped into an embankment. After an AirCare medical helicopter was unable to fly due to weather conditions, Hess was transported to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. The train conductor was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A preliminary investigation revealed that the lights and alerts on the track were working at the time of the accident. Police are still working to determine why Hess crossed the tracks despite warning signs.
