Two people were injured on the Skyhawk ride at Cedar Point in northwest Ohio; the incident occurred when a cable on the ride snapped. According to local news reports, a cable on one of the rides carriages snapped late Saturday night. The ride swings riders as high as 125 feet at close to 60 miles per hour; the ride has been closed indefinitely. Two people were injured in the accident; one rider was treated at a local hospital and released, the other was treated at the scene. The cable damaged the fence in front of the ride where spectators often stand and watch. Its unclear if the two victims were on the ride or watching it down below. The Skyhawk had been closed temporarily last year for an unrelated reason. According to estimates by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), more than 10,000 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for amusement ride-related injuries in 1999.
