Volvo Recalls Thousands Of S60 Vehicles Due To Engine Issues

Certain model year 2011-2012 S60 Volvos manufactured between June 22, 2010 and May 14, 2012 are being recalled due to an issue with the oil pressure warning systems. According to Volvo drivers may not be warned of dropping oil pressure; the driver could continue to drive the vehicle which could then stall out and increase the risk of a crash. It is very important for Volvo drivers to respond to this product recall and bring their cars in and get the oil pressure fixed. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there have been several reports from drivers experiencing some type of issue although no injuries or car accidents have been reported in Cincinnati. One driver drove the vehicle 35 miles after receiving vehicle service when she heard an engine noise. The car was towed back to the dealer and the technician realized the oil in the engine had not been refilled; the vehicle gave no warning of lack of oil pressure. In another incident a customer drove 400 miles after a vehicle service when the engine began to make noise, the customer said no warning messages were visible. Upon a vehicle analysis it was found that there was a lack of oil in the engine. A final report noted that the consumer heard an engine noise and then noticed the vehicle started to stall. Again no oil pressure message was displayed and the vehicle was towed to the dealer where the engine had to be replaced. Volvo told the NHTSA that it received the first report of the problem in February of 2013; the recall was not announced until late December. Although Volvo described the recall as voluntary, under federal regulations, once they are aware of a safety problem it must inform the NHTSA within five business days or face civil fines. Globally more than 44,000 S60s were sold in the United States between 2011 and 2012. The NHTSA gave the vehicle a five-star rating across the board and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded S60 models their Top Safety Pick award since 2011. Volvo has not released any statement regarding the recall however the manufacturer is slated to attend the North American Auto Show in Detroit later this month.
