A recent investigation by NBC 4 has found that certain areas in central Ohio are speeding hot spots, areas where police ticket the most speeders. Digging through four years of records and more than 200,000 speeding tickets from Columbus police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the investigation found that even 1 mile over the speed limit can trigger a ticket. According to the report, most tickets are being written at speeds much higher than in the past; most speeding tickets issued around Columbus were written for people going 15 miles per hour (mph) over the speed limit. In fact, troopers wrote more than 34,000 tickets for motorists going 15 mph over the limit. Drivers are more likely to get speeding tickets in Columbus, specifically in downtown Columbus were Interstate 70/Interstate 71 split; the area was the site of more than 14,000 tickets. Ohio State Highway Patrol lists Interstate 270 north of U.S 33 near Dublin as the area where most speeders get caught. According to the Ohio Public Safety Office, nearly 12,000 motor vehicle accidents in were caused by motorists traveling at an unsafe speed. Speeding was the number one cause of fatal car accidents in 2012. State troopers note that the higher rate of speed someone is traveling before an accident, the greater injury there is likely to be. Motorists should always obey the speed limit and drivers around speeding hot spots should be prepared to handle risky situations involving speeding motorists. If you or someone you love has been injured in a speeding accident caused by a reckless driver, the victim may be entitled to compensation for damages. The Columbus car accident lawyers at O'Connor, Acciani & Levy believe that drivers who failed to obey the rules of the road need to be held accountable for their actions.
