INVOKANA SIDE EFFECTS

Diabetes patients are already struggling with one illness, they do not deserve to be harmed by the very medications that are supposed to protect them. Invokana and similar type 2 diabetes drugs have been linked to numerous medical conditions ranging from mild to very serious. Among the more serious side effects of Invokana are conditions that involve:
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Myocardial infarction
  •  Kidney failure
If you have suffered from any of these conditions, an Invokana attorney in Cincinnati can help you recover compensation for medical bills, lost wages and other damages.

DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a dangerous condition associated with drugs like Invokana. Patients taking Invokana may find that their body cannot access the body's stores of sugar and instead begins to rely on fat stores for energy, leading to diabetic ketoacidosis. The ketones produced by diabetic ketoacidosis raise the levels of acids in the blood and if left untreated, the condition can be fatal. Symptoms of ketoacidosis include:
  • Increased thirst
  • Loss of appetite
  • Confusion
  • Rapid breathing
  • Difficulty getting up in the morning
Diabetes patients with ketoacidosis may require hospitalization and intravenous insulin in order to restore the balance of ketones in their body back to normal. The most serious complications of untreated ketoacidosis include:
  • Kidney failure
  • Heart attack

MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION

Invokana is being linked to myocardial infarction. The condition occurs when the heart does not receive a sufficient supply of blood and the cells of the heart are damaged or die.
  • In clinical trial data reviewed by physicians, Johnson & Johnson revealed that 13 patients suffered a heart attack or stroke within thirty days of beginning a regimen of Invokana.
  • In clinical trials, the risk of heart attack or other cardiovascular injury to patients taking Invokana was 600 percent greater than the risk to patients who were prescribed a placebo.
Experts estimate that the most dangerous side effect of Invokana may not be ketoacidosis, but rather heart attacks and other dangerous cardiovascular injuries.

KIDNEY DAMAGE

In 2014, Johnson & Johnson announced that it would begin testing Invokana to treat diabetic kidney disease (nephropathy). Many diabetes patients experience chronic kidney disease, and the company is seeking to position Invokana as an alternative treatment for kidney disease. Among the members of the FDA committee who reviewed the safety of Invokana, one third (5 out of 15) urged the FDA to reject the drug and prevent its sale in America. Among other things, researchers were concerned that the drug did not offer a patients any benefits that were not available on the market and that the trials indicated severe side effects.

FDA ISSUES A SAFETY ALERT

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received numerous reports that diabetes patients being treated with Invokana were being hospitalized after complications. In response to the reports, the FDA issued a safety communication warning in May 2015 to warn patients and doctors about the dangers posed by type 2 diabetes drugs such as Invokana. Other diabetes medications in the same class as Invokana include:
  • Invokamet
  • Farxiga
  • Xigduo XR
  • Jardiance
  • Glyxambi
The listed diabetes medications all share common ingredients and belong to the same class of drugs that inhibit the kidney in an attempt to control glucose levels in the body. Companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Jannsen Pharmaceuticals, AstraZeneca and Boehringer Ingelheim all produce type 2 diabetes medications that work by restricting the kidney. They are all sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLt2) inhibitors, and all of these drugs have been associated with an increased likelihood of kidney failure. Because these manufacturers failed to warned consumers about these dangerous side effects, Cincinnati patients may be entitled to compensation through an Invokana lawsuit for their suffering
